You are in complete control of the type of potato, the oil used, the amount of salt, and how you want to season your chips. You can add onion powder, garlic powder, or BBQ seasoning.
The best part is you don’t have to worry that the onion potato chips will make you sick due to processing, because you made them. Your kids will love them!
INGREDIENTS FOR ONION POTATO CHIPS
- 2 or more potatoes of your choice (I used russet potatoes)
- 1 tablespoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 2 quarts vegetable oil
In a small bowl mix together the onion powder and salt. This is all the seasoning you need to make onion flavored potato chips.
Slice the potatoes on a mandolin to get them nice and thin. Place the potatoes in cold water and let them sit a few minutes to take out the starch. Drain the potatoes on paper towels for about 5 minutes.
Heat up 2 inches of oil in a large cast iron pot over medium high heat. If you have a deep fry thermometer it should read 300 degrees before you start adding potatoes.
Once the oil is ready fry the potato chips in batches. Line a large flat pan or a bowl with paper towels for draining. Add a handful of potato slices to the oil with a spider and stir them around. They will only take about 3-4 minutes to cook. When they are golden brown remove the potatoes from the oil and place them on the paper towels to drain. Cook the remaining potatoes.
Put the seasoning mix in a sieve and dust the potato chips making sure you get them all. If they are in a bowl be sure to toss them to coat. Let them cool and serve. You will be sure to enjoy the fresh taste of the onion potato chips.
