Since fermented foods are good for your gut, I’ve been trying to incorporate more of them into my diet. By itself, kimchi is too spicy for me. Fortunately, there are various ways to turn down the heat. One suggestion was to add several components to help diffuse the heat of the dish. A kimchi breakfast bowl would be perfect!
What is Kimchi and Why is it Good For You?
Kimchi is a Korean side dish made of fermented vegetables and various spices. The kind you see in the grocery store usually contains ingredients like napa cabbage, ginger, garlic, onions, salt, sugar and chili pepper. I have seen cucumber and radish kimchi at Korean stores or restaurants.
Kimchi clearly offers some great health benefits. The one that stands out the most is the beneficial probiotics. Probiotics help balance the bacteria in your gut, which aids in digestion. It’s also high in antioxidants that help protect us from chronic disease. So, if you’re looking to increase your gut health, then kimchi may be for you.
If you’re not a fan of spicy foods, no worries, here are some ways to tone it down.
- Add a sweet element to cut the heat – sugar or honey
- Incorporate more ingredients to diffuse the heat
- Serve it with starch – bread, pasta, rice
- Acid cuts the intensity – lemon, lime, vinegar
- Dairy will help counteract the heat – even non-dairy works
INGREDIENTS
- 4 eggs, beaten
- 2 small red peppers, diced
- 1/4 cup red onion, diced
- 3-4 white button mushrooms
- 1/4 cup fresh spinach
- kimchi, desired amount
- handful of crunchy sprouts
- salt
- pepper
DIRECTIONS
- Heat a small amount of oil in a frying pan over medium low heat.
- Cut up the peppers, onions, and mushrooms. Add to the pan once it’s hot, cook for about 5 minutes, then add the spinach and let it wilt.
- Add the beaten eggs into the pan, then cook until the eggs are set. Remove from the pan immediately. Add some kimchi to the pan to warm it up, then put on top of your eggs.
- Grab a good handful of crunchy sprouts and place them on top.
Finally, it’s time to enjoy your Kimchi Breakfast Bowl.
Since your health is linked to your diet, it’s beneficial to keep your gut bacteria balanced. Adding fermented foods to your diet is just one way to maximize your health. If you can handle the heat, this fermented super food is undoubtedly something you want to add to your diet.
