I was diagnosed with breast cancer last year and needed to make some dietary changes. Since I am not eating beef right now I decided to make pork burgers. I was only eating beef once every two weeks before this because my husband had brain cancer. After extensive research I found out that he should stay away from foods that cause inflammation and that is when we started making pork burgers.
Why Limit Red Meat?
The reason I am not eating beef is because it causes inflammation in the body. Inflammatory foods cause damage to healthy cells and tissues, which a healthy body can repair. Prolonged periods of inflammation in your body can weaken your immune system, therefor leaving you body susceptible to disease.
Limit red meat
“Eating too much red meat, like pork, beef, lamb, deer and buffalo, can increase your cancer risk. Try to limit red meat to 18 oz. or less a week,” says Karla Crawford, a senior clinical dietitian in MD Anderson’s Integrative Medicine Center.
INGREDIENTS
- 1 lb. ground pork
- 1/2 onion chopped
- 4 slices gluten free dairy free cheese
- 2-3 tablespoon gluten free dairy free margarine
- salt
- pepper
Makes 4 1/4 pound pork burgers
In a bowl add all the ingredients except the cheese and mix. You can buy cheese that is already shredded. If you cannot find shredded cheese just stack a couple of slices and cut them into stripes. Add the cheese and mix, so it is throughout the ground pork.
TIP: Adding the margarine gives the pork some fat so the burgers are not dry.
Make your patties, put them on a tray, and put them in the freezer for about 8 minutes. This just helps them stay together.
Preheat the grill and place the pork burgers on the grates. Cook for about 5 minutes, flip and grill another 5 minutes. This time depends on how thin or thick you make your burgers as well.
Now that the pork burgers are done it is time to build them. Take a toasted bun, add a sauce of your choice to the bun, then lay down the burger. Top it with lettuce, tomato, onion or whatever you wish.
Add some fries, coleslaw and maybe even a pickle to the plate. Use some side dishes that appeal to your taste.
