Grilled Cheese Sandwiches are an all time favorite of kids and adults everywhere. This one is made on home made bread and the only thing it’s missing is the gluten and dairy. I think everyone has had one of these sandwiches at some time in there life.
You only need three ingredients to make it and it takes very little time. There’s something about gooey melted cheese and bread toasted in a pan with butter that we all love. Consequently, it brings people back to their childhood and gives them comfort.
History of Grilled Cheese
Grilled cheese has been around for centuries, just in a different form, according to historians.
Before 1920, grilled cheese was made as an open faced sandwich with grated American cheese.
In the 1930’s grilled cheese became a staple in the American diet because it was inexpensive and provided enough nutrition to carry on. It’s popularity increased during WWII, and soon after became a menu item for school lunches and at home.
Today deli’s and 5 star restaurants create many variations of this grilled goodness. They have experimented with different breads and cheeses. You will even find gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches today.
There are countless ways you can make this wonderful sandwich these days, but I am going for the classic version of this comforting sandwich.
INGREDIENTS
- gluten free dairy free bread (King Arthur Bread Mix)
- gluten free dairy free American cheese (Daiya)
- margarine (Smart Balance)
The first thing you need to do is heat up your frying pan. I like to put a little margarine in the pan, as well as on my bread.
Butter one side of each piece of bread. Place one slice in the pan, put two pieces of your favorite cheese down, and cover it with the other slice.
Cook until the bread is crispy enough to flip. (Don’t put the heat too high or it will just burn.) Cook until the other side is crispy and remove from the pan. Slice the sandwich in half and enjoy the toasted, gooey, melted cheese sandwich that you have been craving all day.
Pair it with a bowl of your favorite soup and you have a meal.
If you have never tried grilled cheese before, you will undoubtedly enjoy it.
