Who doesn’t enjoy a burger with a side of chips? If your family is like mine, they love potatoes any way they can get them. In fact, we love them so much we grow our own. It doesn’t get any fresher than that. I took our home grown sweet potatoes and made sweet potato chips.
Fortunately, my son has a new love for sweet potatoes. I thought some homemade sweet potato chips would pair well with a plant-based burger. They were so fantastic, he asked me to make them again.
Making a transition to healthier foods can be difficult, especially for kids. We still have our potato chips, but without all the additives that are harmful. As a cancer survivor and nutrition coach, I’d say that’s a win!
Advantages of making your own potato chips
- You’re in control of the salt, fat and additives
- They can be baked, fried, or air fried
- Season them how you like
- No preservatives needed
- So many types of potatoes to choose from
- They just taste better!
INGREDIENTS
- 2 medium or 1 large sweet potato
- canola oil
- salt
DIRECTIONS
- Heat a pot of oil for the potato chips if you are going to fry them.
- Wash the potatoes, slice them on a mandolin. If you don’t have one you can slice the potatoes as thin as you can get them.
- Put about 5 of 6 slices in a time so you don’t crowd the pot. Cook for a few minutes until brown in color, then remove from pot. Drain on paper towels and lightly salt them.
- Repeat step 3 until you are done.
- Grab a handful and enjoy!
Potatoes chips have become a staple snack in most households. However, this snack should keep to a minimum because an over abundance can be detrimental to your health. Fortunately, you can make your own sweet potato or regular potato chips and keep the fat, salt, and additives to a minimal amount. Potatoes offer a good deal of nutrients and making your own chips is better for your health.
