Going dairy free was hard because I missed cheese. Who doesn’t love cheese? It makes so many things taste better. Thank goodness Daiya Foods makes mozzarella style cheese sticks. I have been wanting to make fried mozzarella sticks for months. Now I know fried foods are not good for you, but every now and then you need to break loose. Besides, how do you tell your child they can’t enjoy cheese anymore? There is just something comforting about cheese.
These fried mozzarella sticks could not have come out more perfect. They are crispy on the outside and melted on the inside. The only thing they lack is the stretch you get when you pull on melted mozzarella, but I can live with that. Otherwise, they are delicious! The flavor of mozzarella is spot on.
INGREDIENTS
- 12 Daiya mozzarella cheese sticks
- 3-4 eggs, beaten
- gluten free flour
- 1 cup gluten free dairy free unseasoned breadcrumbs (4C)
- 1 tablespoon parsley
- 1/2 tablespoon oregano
- 1/2 tablespoon basil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 cup gluten free dairy free parmesan cheese
- Canola Oil – enough to cover the cheese sticks, about 3 inches deep
The trick to making perfect fried mozzarella sticks is keeping the cheese sticks frozen until you are ready.
First, you will need three containers. In the first container put the flour and season with a small amount of salt and pepper. In the second container, crack the eggs and beat them. To the third container add the bread crumbs, parsley, basil, oregano, garlic powder, parmesan cheese and a little salt.
Roll the mozzarella sticks in flour, then dip in egg, finally roll them in the breadcrumbs. They are frozen so you can push them into the breadcrumbs to make sure you get a nice coating.
Heat about 3 inches of oil in a deep pan. I don’t have a thermometer, so I usually drop in some breadcrumbs and if the start to sizzle it is ready. Once the oil is hot, drop in your mozzarella sticks and fry for about 3 minutes.
TIP: If the oil is too hot the breadcrumbs will burn and the cheese may not be melted. To test the oil dip a wooden spoon in the oil. It should bubble steadily, if it’s a vigorous bubble it’s too hot.
You may have to roll them around a bit to make sure all sides are golden brown. When the mozzarella sticks are fried to a golden color they are ready to take out. Sometimes the cheese will start to burst out the side, but don’t fret your cheese is melted.
Take the fried mozzarella sticks out and drain on a paper towel. Add your favorite marinara sauce or whatever you like to dip them in and enjoy! I paired mine with a plant based burger that has Daiya sliced mozzarella cheese on top.
