I don’t think I know many people who do not like s’mores. Everyone may not be fond of marshmallows. However, they still seem to enjoy s’mores. When you combine toasted marshmallow, melted chocolate, and graham crackers something amazing happens. Who can resist this ooey, gooey, heavenly treat?
S’mores have the best of everything. They are crunchy, gooey, indulgent, and rich. How could you go wrong?
S’mores are the ultimate campfire dessert. The option of a campfire may not always be available. You can always make s’mores in the oven, the toaster, or with a fireplace.
History of S’mores
No one really knows exactly who invented the s’more (some more). The Girl Scouts published a recipe in the 1920’s and since no one else claimed this treat the Girl Scouts received credit.
Similar treats were introduced around 1913. First, Mallomars (s’mores in a cookie form) were introduced. Next, Moonpies, another marshmallow treat made its debut a few years later. It seems all of these fantastic treats had the same idea. Roasted marshmallow, chocolate, and graham crackers.
People have been roasting marshmallows since the 1890’s, but they did not incorporate chocolate bars or graham crackers until later.
How Did Marshmallows Come About?
It seems the French are responsible for this fluffy whipped treat.
The plant to make marshmallows was typically used for medicinal purposes, but this all changed when the French got a hold of it. The French combined the root juice of the plant with eggs and sugar to create what we know as the marshmallow today. This was a game changer for the better.

INGREDIENTS
- 8 gluten free dairy free graham crackers (kinnickinick)
- 4 gluten free marshmallows (jetpuff, wegmans brand)
- 4 pieces gluten free and dairy free chocolate bars or chips (enjoy life)
S’mores are best know as a campfire treat, but you can definitely make them in the comfort of your kitchen. Simply bring the campfire treat inside and continue to enjoy it all year round. I have made them in the toaster, in the oven and by fire in a wood burning stove.
How to Make S’mores Indoors
Next, line a tray with foil and place the graham crackers down on top. On one side put a section of the chocolate bar and on the other side put a marshmallow. Put them in the toaster, but keep a close eye on them so they don’t burn. The chocolate will melt slightly and the marshmallow will get a beautiful golden color. Finally, they are ready to be assembled.
To assemble, just flip the half with the chocolate bar on top of the marshmallow and gently press it together. Most importantly, it’s time to enjoy your s’more.
Everyone will be asking for some more! They may not be nutritious, but they certainly are delicious.
