Today I am making an Italian Submarine Sandwich. Subs are an all time favorite of many people. They are also called a hero, hoagie, or submarine sandwich, depending on where you are from. No matter what the name, there are many different ways to make them and they are delicious. However, trying to find a place to make a gluten free dairy free version is a little tough. Especially one that actually taste good!
Jersey Mike’s does make gluten free subs and they are pretty good. The meats and the toppings are all very good. The problem is gluten free bread takes a little extra care.
In my experience, all gluten free bread needs to be slightly toasted or warmed to taste more like real bread. When this step is skipped you end up with a drier bread and a disappointing sandwich.
My son enjoys getting them because it is usually a treat. This time we are making our own since we do not have a Jersey Mike’s close enough to us. So let’s dive into to making this mouthwatering Italian Submarine Sandwich
INGREDIENTS
- gluten free dairy free sub rolls
- olive oil
- red wine vinegar
- salami – gluten free
- ham – gluten free
- capicola – gluten free
- pepperoni – gluten free
- gluten free dairy free cheese
- spinach or lettuce, sliced in stripes
- onion, thinly sliced
- tomato, thinly sliced
- oregano
- salt pepper
I used Dr. Scharr’s baguettes to make my Italian Submarine Sandwich. Cut it half so you have two pieces and place them in the toaster. You don’t want to cut them open. This will allow them to get warm on the inside, which makes the perfect roll.
Putting the Italian Submarine Sandwich Together
Once they are done toasting, cut the roll open. Put the amount of oil and then vinegar you like on the roll. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and oregano. Start layering your sandwich meat. I put down the ham first, then the capicola, salami, pepperoni, and finally the cheese. Next, add the lettuce, tomato, and onion. If you like hot or sweet peppers put them on top.
Now it is time to taste that delectable Italian Submarine Sandwich! You can put some potato chips on the side to complete it.
