Have you ever heard of onion jam before? Today I am making bacon onion jam. This jam is sweet and savory! It makes a delicious complement to many foods and it will not disappoint. You can top Salmon, steak, burgers, or even put it on top of your pizza.
This is something I have been wanting to try for a while now. I have to say I wasn’t sure about it, but I am glad I made it. My son gave me a thumbs up and he always tells me the truth. My mom passed this bacon onion jam recipe onto a friend who absolutely loved it as well.
The flavors of the onions, bacon, vinegar and sugar just meld together in the most amazing way. It actually makes your taste buds dance. You have to give it a try.
INGREDIENTS
- 4 slices of gluten free bacon
- 3 medium sized vidalia onions
- 3 1/2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
- salt
- pepper
Let’s make some Bacon onion jam. Cook the bacon until it is crispy. When the bacon is done take it out and drain on paper towels. Drain all the bacon fat except one tablespoon.
Slice the onions and add them to the bacon fat. Cook them for about 12-15 minutes to caramelize the onions. Caramelizing them builds the flavor of your jam. Add the sugar, vinegar, and 3 tablespoons of water. Add salt and pepper and stir to combine the ingredients. Cover and cook for 15-20 minutes until it is a jam like consistency.
I topped a piece of salmon with this amazing bacon onion jam and it was loved by all. This is definitely one of my new favorite condiments.
Give it a try and let me know what you think.
