What exactly is a fish taco? I often wondered why one would make a fish taco, as it sounded unappetizing. However, don’t knock it ’til you try it. They are actually quite good.
I mulled over several recipes trying to decide what type of fish I wanted to use. Then I needed to choose what kind of seasoning. Finally, I had to choose a topping.
Definition of a Taco
Just so it is clear, a taco is defined as a Mexican dish consisting of a fried tortilla, folded and filled with various mixtures. For instance, seasoned meat, vegetables, fish, etc. Today they are pretty much filled with anything.
Fish tacos are great because they are healthy and come together very quickly. You can also top them with various things.
INGREDIENTS
- 1 lb of Mahi Mahi, or another white fish
- 2 tablespoons lime
- 1/4 cup canola oil
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon pepper
- 1 medium red onion, diced
- Tortillas
Making fish tacos is incredibly easy. In a bowl mix together lime, canola oil, salt, pepper, chili powder, and garlic powder. Place the fish in the bowl and marinate for 15minutes.
Dice up your onions and put them to the side.
Heat your pan over medium heat, then place the fish in the pan and cook for 3 minutes. Flip and cook for an additional 3 minutes.
While you are cooking your fish get your tortillas ready. I like to warm mine in a cast iron pan. It only takes 30 – 40 seconds per side. Take them out of the pan and place in foil to keep them warm.
INGREDIENTS FOR AVOCADO CREMA
- 2 avocado
- 2 tablespoons lime juice
- 1 tsp honey
- 1/4 c water
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon pepper
I have never made avocado crema before, but I think it makes a wonderful addition to the fish tacos. Avocados are bland so a little bit of lime, a touch of honey for sweetness and seasoning really gives it a beautiful flavor.
