Weight Watchers points for onions straws. Recipe serves 6 and 1 serving equals 5 points.
Onion straws can serve more than one purpose. You can use them as an appetizer, a side dish, or put them on top of your burger for some crunch. Either way they are delicious!
I have tried multiple types of coatings on onions to get just the right crunch. Some recipes use wet batters and others use milk and then dredge the onions in a dry mix. There are also different combinations of dry mixes. I finally found just the right combination of ingredients to get a nice crunch on the outside of the onion straws. This mix will stick to the onion and stay on while in the oil.
INGREDIENTS
- 2 medium onions sliced thin
- almond milk
- 1 cup gluten free flour
- 1 cup gluten free corn starch
- 2 tablespoon garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons paprika
- salt
- pepper
- vegetable or canola oil (enough to submerge the onions)
Now let’s make some onion straws! Get a pot of oil ready for frying. If you do not have a thermometer then you can drop one onion in the oil and if it starts to bubble right away the oil is ready.
The first thing you want to do is thinly slice the onions. Place the onions in a deep dish and cover them completely with almond milk or any other dairy free milk. Let them sock in the milk for an hour.
In a medium bowl mix together the flour, cornstarch, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. You can come up with your own spice combination if you don’t like this one.
Take the onions out of the milk and dredge them in the spice mix. Shake off any excess and start gently placing the onions in the oil. I use a spider to place them in the oil to avoid splattering.
Fry the onions until they are golden brown and crisp. Remove the onions and drain them on paper towels to get rid of the excess oil. Sprinkle the onions straws with a little salt if needed.
Enjoy!
